It is not only the crises of recent years that have shown the central role played by climate protection and the associated compliance with climate targets.  They have, however, put what should actually be commonly acknowledged on the agenda anew and made it visible in a forceful way.
The company behind gamesweekberlin, Booster Space, wants to make an ongoing contribution to environmental and climate protection.  We are guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and focus here in particular on the areas of “Sustainable consumption and production” (12.) and “Take immediate action to combat climate change and its effects” (13.). In our preventive grants, we primarily support under paragraph #15: “Protect terrestrial ecosystems – protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, end and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.” (elsewhere, we also support the points of “Gender Equality – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” (5.) – including with the Womenize! Games and Tech action platform  and our Safe Space Policy at all our events).

Over the years, we have made changes to our formats and events to help reduce our carbon footprint.  The urgency is now such that for 2022 we have decided to act even more extensively than before – knowing that this will involve significant changes to the experiences we are used to.

Over the years, we have made changes to our formats and events to help reduce our carbon footprint.  The urgency is now such that for 2022 we have decided to act even more extensively than before – knowing that this will involve significant changes to the experiences we are used to.

However, we see these measures as an opportunity and not as a restriction. Climate protection always means an increase in the quality of life, but everyone has to experience this for themselves.  It depends on the sum of small steps and actions. Not everything can be controlled and not everything can be formulated in a meaningful way. Accordingly, here is only an excerpt of the measures we have recorded for gamesweekberlin 2022 and our team:
We will refrain from organizing large international conferences! Unlike in the past, we will focus on the regional target group in 2022 and not invite the whole world to Berlin. To still be open for international business, we will offer formats like Dev Booster (Developer Showcase and Competition), MeetToMatch (Business Networking) and Career Day (Recruitment Track) as online events.
Not all companies will have to travel to our exhibition to be present on site. We avoid excessive travel volume via active representations with local SHeroes, as well as hybrid concepts.
We support regional and international forest projects. Not via compensation payments, but via proactive donations and sponsorships.
We will reuse as many existing materials as possible and avoid printing new materials as much as possible. So bear with us when we reuse old rollups, banners, badges, name tags, lanyards and so on. It would be a bigger waste to throw them away….
When we do need to print something, we make an effort to use more sustainable materials for all of our printed materials and promotional items. In addition, we then work with a local printer to avoid unnecessary transportation.
Our catering will be purely vegetarian and vegan, and we want to try to work with caterers who use seasonal and local produce.
We want to greatly reduce the amount of waste generated at our events. For example, there will be no single-use plastics in catering, among other things.
We will actively seek partners who focus on sustainability. This also applies to our vendors, sponsors and suppliers.
We will encourage all our visitors and speakers to use environmentally friendly travel options. We will not cover the cost of air travel.
We only offer railcards, public transport tickets or bicycles for our employees.
We are advocates of a paperless office and send all contracts or invoices via our online system or as a digitally signed PDF and ask our partners to join us, because unfortunately the effect is less if we still have to print out email attachments and scan “originals”.

Stardew Valley in the Rainforest

Plantaciones Edelman, founded in 2011, is a project in Costa Rica that aims to protect the rain forest. It offers you  (and us) to become tree-patrons. The project plants extremely rare trees, among others the Dipteryx oleifera, a tree that is home to the endangered Great Green Macaw. The project is run by people we know in person, it provides full transparency with regular pictures of the trees – visits are possible.
You may wonder what the difference is to all the other reforestation and C02 compensation projects out there?
1. They own the properties on which the trees are planted
2. They keep track of the trees and clear them regularly for at least four years until they are big enough to survive on their own
3. Their trees are never cut down
4. Their trees help to restore the habitat of the Great Green Macaw – a rare and sympathetic green parrot
gamesweekberlin is patron of a small hand selected section of trees. For Dev Booster we donate a patronage in value of 500 EUR on behalf of the winner of the Audience Award. We will do this in any future edition.

GamesForest.club

Gamesweekberlin  is proud founding member of the new gamesforest.club. Booster Space owns a small little virtual forest on the site that will be expanded year by year. For now we started with donations to the German Beech Jungle and Water Catchments.
The GamesForest.club is a non-profit initiative to support the games- and creative industries to invest in carbon absorption via planting and protecting forests. All restoration activities in real life will be shown in its digital twin, the Gamesforest (https://gamesforest.club/).
For the Audience Award of our Dev Booster competition we decided to add a special section in value of another 500 EUR on top. We will continue to grow accordingly award by award.

SubSeGa

On behalf of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE (https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/research-projects/subsega.html), we are working on a game developer community activation and conference format for the Federal Environment Agency (https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/) in Germany. The SubSeGa research team at Fraunhofer ISE is exploring the young field of serious games in terms of the benefits of a shift towards more sustainability by investigating the effectiveness and the best possible way to incorporate learning content and the desired change in awareness into game design. In keeping with these activities, our friends at Quantumfrog (https://www.quantumfrog.de/) will be developing a “green game” that is expected to bring great potential for the future.
More details to  follow in the second half of 2022!
