The Womenize! team works hard every time to invite inspiring and motivating women from all over the world. Today, we have three incredible Womenize! Games and Tech speakers whom we would like to introduce and a glimspe into the topics they’ll discuss at the conference.
Rachel “Seltzer” Quirico entered esports as a competitive gamer in 2006 and made the pivot to on-camera presenting in 2008. She has emceed tournaments and international championships for Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, StarCraft 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Overwatch and more. Rachel regularly hosts Twitch’s official event coverage at E3, PAX and Comic-Con.
Topic: A Personal Journey through more than a Decade in Esports
Carolin Wendt started working in the games industry in 2015. For four years, she has been responsible for the submission process as part of the award committee of the DCP. She recently joined CD PROJEKT RED as community manager for German-speaking regions where she is planning communicative strategies spanning all franchises.
Topic: Building bridges & putting out fires: Community management in games
Rae Grimm studied Fotodesign but decided to swap pictures for words and write about video games fulltime in 2011. Since 2016 she’s Head of GamePro.de, Germany’s leading website specialized on console gaming. That includes much less writing and a lot more managing, including leading a small team across different locations.
Topic: How to lead a team in the gaming industry and stay (mostly) sane
There is a lot is happening on the QUO VADIS front at the moment. That’s why we have a big program update for you. Uke Bosse and Nina Franoszek having a fireside chat about motion capture will be one of our highlights.
CREATING A VILLAIN
Remember this crazy bitch from Wolfenstein? Irene Engel, the main antagonist of Wolfenstein II was a brilliant character brought to life in the motion capture studio by award-winning actress Nina Franoszek. At QUO VADIS 2019, Uke Bosse will host a fireside chat with Nina who will first talk about how she overcame her prejudices and thus became enthusiastic about video games. Furthermore she will give you insights into the intensive production and performance for a multi-layered character like Irene Engel.
“I’ve done a lot of research to understand my own past and been to Auschwitz and all that, but as an actor what really convinced me was the script. The script to me was very similar to Inglourious Basterds and I was given the opportunity to play sort of the Cristoph Waltz character as a female with a boytoy.”Nina Franoszek, The Hollywood Reporter
THIS FIRESIDE CHAT WILL BE PRESENTED BY:
Uke Bosse is a professor for game design at Mediadesign Hochschulein Berlin and a media producer, director and writer, who has worked on TV programs such as “MTV Game One” and “Reload”. He is also an actor and comedian. But the most important thing you need to know about him is that he’s actually a unicorn. His devotion for video games stems from his past, when the other unicorns wouldn’t let him join in “Catch the bagel on the green meadow” and other silly unicorn games. He luckily shrugged his unicorn shoulders and instead devoted himself to games that are not silly at all: video games.
Nina Franoszek performed in over 100 feature films and television shows, including Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist” and the Emmy Award winning TV show “Mad Men”. She also co-starred with celebrities like Tilda Swinton and Donald Sutherland. Her awards include a Grimme Prize for best leading actress and a German Screen Actors Award for best Ensemble in the TV series “Weissensee Saga II” in 2014. Since her performance in Wolfenstein, for which she was nominated for the BTVA Video Game Voice Acting Award in 2017, she is also a passionate motion capture performer.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING THEM BOTH AT QUO VADIS 2019!
Happy New Year! Today we want to feed you with details about the first four summits of QUO VADIS 2019.
In order to tailor the QUO VADIS experience to your individual needs, we gave each of the two event days a thematic focus. Whether you want to get into business on Monday, dive deep into development trends on Tuesday or both, is your decision. We have set up 1-day focus passes for that reason.
We will have eight densely packed conference shots on two days and two stages. We call them summits. Each summit is half a day long. Let me introduce the summits of day one to you:
NEW BUSINESS MODELS SUMMIT
Free-to-play is a dominant business model in the video game industry. But there are also alternative business models that have emerged. Some hybrid models combine classical free-to-play mechanics with in game advertising. For example, players are given a choice to either buy in-game currency or instead are asked to watch a video ad in order to afford a building upgrade or new weapon type. We will investigate how free-to-play is doing right now, what kind of alternative business models have emerged already, and how they can be used meaningfully.
The best product in the world is worth nothing if you cannot bring it to the market. This is what the QUO VADIS: Marketing Summit is all about – to show you the best marketing strategies for your game. We’ll be talking about global marketing strategies. About the real value of B2C events for smaller studios. About the eternal question if you really should put your money on influencers. About building an IP and finding the right merchandise to promote it and making a little extra money. About which marketing platforms you should target and which players you should re-target.
LIVE OPS & COMMUNITY MGMT SUMMIT
Keeping a video game alive and healthy proves to be a full-time job, or more accurately: many full-time jobs. But it’s worth it, as many developers credit more than 50% of their game’s revenue comes from events and promotions. Keeping an eye on the key metrics that are really important is one thing, activating players and keeping them engaged with meaningful and personalized content in a vivid community is another. This summit presents best cases of content delivery, successful events and promotions, community management done right and the use of analytics to really understand what players want.
FUNDRAISING & FINANCING
In order to finance a game, German developer studios either have to be inventive with promotional campaigns – or they make their way through the red tape forest and apply for funding. Often they must do both. The German Games Fond, worth 50 million Euros annually, that will come into effect in fall 2019, is a step in the right direction. But who can apply for the money and how? Can it be combined with other funding initiatives? Who can help with an initial funding application? We take a look at the different ways of how a game can be financed, from funding pools to co-production and venture capital investment.
WE WILL INTRODUCE THE SUMMITS OF THE 2ND DAY SOON, SO STAY TUNED!
Since the very beginnings of gamesweekberlin, QUO VADIS has always been featured as a core event of the week, along with A MAZE. / Berlin, Gamefest and the Matchmaking Dinner. As the QUO VADIS – game development & business conference is a significant part of gamesweekberlin, we’re especially proud to announce that we (Booster Space, founders of gamesweekberlin) are the new organizers behind it! We are excited to take over from Aruba Events and Computec Media to continue developing QUO VADIS as a cutting-edge experience for developers and professional delegates of the games industry, as well as being able to develop new ideas, perspectives and plans for future operations.
What does that mean?
The gamesweekberlin and you as partners and attendees will increasingly benefit from the synergies in this new structure. Most of the week’s central events (Womenize!, Gamefest and QUO VADIS) will be organized by the same team at one location. It will also lead to an even greater efficiency in the collaboration with partner events like A MAZE. / Berlin and the Matchmaking Dinner. Underlined by the new 7-days gamesweekberlin Experience ticket.
What is going to change?
QUO VADIS will be gradually modified as part of the consolidation process: forward-looking trends in the sector will basically remain the most important components of this event. In order to make the participants’ experience in Berlin even more profitable, the topics will be offered in compact modules to specific target groups.
The thematic focuses in 2019 will center on mobile games development, monetisation and publishing, community management and live operations as well as on production financing and distribution. Further topics are to be identified in tandem with the developer community. Well established formats of QUO VADIS such as the business networking system of MeetToMatch and the exhibition will carry on the tradition.
We want you to know that we at Booster Space are aware of the responsibility we have for QUO VADIS. We are looking forward to growing it together with you! Feel free to share your ideas and wishes any time.
